Should You Visit Edinburgh in August? What You Need to Know

Edinburgh in August is a magical time of year, and it is largely considered one of the best times to visit. The city comes alive with the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the Highland Games in neighboring areas, making the streets swell with visitors from all over the world. When I was planning my first trip to Scotland back in 2025, I had no idea I had picked the busiest month to visit Edinburgh until the flights were already booked! Luckily, I’m an early bird and still beat most visitors to Edinburgh’s major attractions and scenic viewpoints. But if I were advising a friend on their Scotland trip, I’d probably encourage them to think twice before visiting Edinburgh in August until they considered the factors below.

Consider these questions to decide if August is the best time for you to visit Edinburgh.

Are you prepared to pay higher prices for accommodations?

The sticker shock on accommodations in Edinburgh during the month of August is real. I stayed in Edinburgh’s Old Town neighborhood and although I loved how central the area was, the nightly prices for hotels in August were about double that of September bookings! If it’s your first time visiting Edinburgh, I recommend staying near Princes Street because of it’s accessibility to major attractions around the city and the Edinburgh Waverley train station if you plan to arrive from London. But it’s worth considering just how much you’re willing to trade price for proximity. If your heart is set on visiting Edinburgh in August but iffy on the price tag, you may want consider alternative neighborhoods such as Fountainbridge, Holyrood for a quieter stay, or Leith.

Are you okay with crowds?

As I previously mentioned, August is Edinburgh’s busiest month event- and visitor-wise. The wait times to get into attractions like Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, as well as restaurants can be lengthy. Interested in walking the Royal Mile or eyeing the luminously painted storefronts on Victoria Street? Expect crowds. Unless you’re an early bird or can handle the throngs, you may want to reconsider coming to Edinburgh in August!

Are you interested in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

Edinburgh’s Festival Fringe, known colloquially as “the Fringe” or the “Edinburgh Fringe”, is the world’s largest performing arts festival. Every year in the month of August, Edinburgh provides a forum for tens of thousands of performers, comedians, and artists to perform their sets. The result is a city that bursts with laughter, awe, and inspiration as public comedy shows, street performances, and music events circulate throughout the month. Many performances are entirely free, others are pay-what-you-can or ticketed for a small fee. You can view more about the Edinburgh Festival Fringe here. It is an incredible sight to see, and I fondly remember stopping nearly every couple of blocks to observe the street performers! That said, if you’re not particularly interested in this event, you may find your visit to Edinburgh a bit inconvenienced if visiting in August.

Are you interested in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo?

Also held in the month of August, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a theatrical music and marching performance by armed forces from around the globe taking place at Edinburgh Castle. I was able to attend the 75th anniversary of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2025, and it was hands down the best decisions I made in planning my visit to Edinburgh! Seeing the intricate display of military tattoos from Scotland, England, Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine, the United States and other regions illuminate the historic grounds of Edinburgh Castle is an unforgettable memory. If you’re considering a visit to Edinburgh in August, don’t skip this event!
